Yes, this is a real quote. Yes, I laughed out loud when I read it.
Back in March 2012, there was a NIP incident at a waterpark and the issue blew up all over their Facebook page. It got very heated and many of us spent a long time trying to defend our rights to nurse in public and we provided fact after fact to negate all the ignorant comments other people were spewing.
This quote, however, really hit a nerve with me. I’m so tired of hearing this said by people who have no clue what goes into pumping. They think it’s just so simple….
I wrote this in response:
I still want to know how you would define pumping as “simple”…you have never breastfed, so I assume that means you have never used a pump. So, please explain to me how you know it’s “simple”.
Let me try to explain why you are very ignorant on this subject.
1. Some moms do not respond to a breast pump and they get no milk…they are not the same as a baby nursing. Babies are born to breastfeed.
2. Do you know how long it takes to pump just ONE bottle? One pumping session is 20-30 MINUTES and you may get less than an ounce or two…maybe more if you are lucky…and babies eat like 3-4 + oz.per feeding..Sooo, that ONE bottle could take multiple pumping sessions over HOURS!!…
3. Did you know that not every baby takes a bottle? What then?!
4. And while she’s giving this bottle, she’s not removing the milk from her breast, so she gets engorged and starts developing a clogged duct that can turn into mastitis and require a doctor visit and antibiotics
5. Then her milk supply dwindles due to missing a feeding so her body thinks she doesn’t need the milk anymore and she can’t make enough milk later to feed him.
6. And then the mom has to drag a screaming hungry baby (and other screaming kids) around to find a place to heat the bottle….
Yeah, it’s just that simple to pump and feed a bottle………..or she could just take a few seconds and nurse her baby, straight from the tap, just like nature intended!

Also the milk adjusts to the needs of the baby. If you pump milk at night, for example, you will be giving the baby night milk, even if it’s daytime when they have the bottle. If you pump on a cold day,the milk will not be as dilute or thirst quenching as it would be on a hot day.

Pumping just doesn’t work for me. I get max 1oz but most of the time I barely get enough to cover the bottom of the bottle and never get a let down.
Combine that with a baby who won’t take a bottle but will drink from a glass wasting at least half of the pumped milk.

The fact that often, pumping (or failure to pump) can be seen as ‘I am not producing enough milk, I am starving my baby’ and that mentality, my very dear friend, just before I met her, was told by a very uneducated midwife here in the uk, oh if your baby is hungry a lot, pump for me, when she could get ‘an ounce every 30 mins or so’ she was informed she was starving her children and ‘HAD to give them a bottle imeadiatly or I will re-admit them and force you to’ she was, in fact, perfectly fine and it was standard newborn behavior, which she wasn’t aware, she she had never seen Breastfeed infants!
Which brings me to my second point, pumping hides Breastfeeding, which benefits nobody but anti-Breastfeeding campaniors!
My LO refuses a bottle…i can pump all day and she wont take it, what about her? She should starve rather than offend someone else? People are so crazy, if you don’t have a baby, don’t comment on babies.
Even if they *have* had babies, like my mother, and are still more concerned with “modesty” and common acceptance over nourishment and evidence-based facts .. they still shouldn’t comment 🙂 It’s been a learning curve for her to witness me nurse my two sons thru 18 months .. particularly while we are at dinner in a restaurant ^_^ Casey
The fact that an incredibly young baby will enjoy the ease of not having to work so hard for an artificial nipple and could develop nipple preference. This could lead to days of agony for Mom and baby and everyone within earshot as they work to re-establish the fact that Mom’s boobs don’t flow as quickly as a bottle and require work. **IF** she can even get baby to latch on again!
OH! And some women (like me!) become overstimulated by a pump and end up engorged for three days after easily pumping one to four ounces! Then, they end up on the clogged duct/mastitis cycle you mentioned earlier.
If I hear one more person compare breastfeeding in public to urinating/defecating/fornicating in public, I will gladly show up to said establishment and perform said comparison and let them see which one they would prefer to witness…..
………not really… But I’m that pissed off about these ignorant pricks and their ignorant comments…
When any of those activities sustains the life of an infant, they’ll be just fine.
It’s amazing to me that people who have never breastfed know exactly what breastfeeding mothers should do, and that mothers who have breastfed expect everyone else to do it the same way. Mothers and babies are all different. What works for one might not work for another.
It also astonishes me that people who would never complain vocally about somebody expectorating onto the sidewalk or showing his natal cleft, or a woman exposing large portions of her breast for a purpose other than feeding, won’t hesitate to cause a scene over a mother taking care of her child.
Human beings have a marvelous feature called a neck, which allows them to turn their heads to control what they see. Nature is a wonderful thing.
